Kūtai

The Senior preschool 3 ½ – 5+ yr olds – Kūtai Room, is down the other end of the building and has the biggest outdoor space of the centre.

A permanent play structure outside, sandpit, water play, bikes and a veggie garden are on offer. Once again for continuity of care the environment is set up in a similar way to the junior preschool, everything is simply more age appropriate and the routines throughout the day differ.

Our transition to school programme has been put together through extensive consultation with families, the local primary schools and our teachers of whom 2 are qualified primary school teachers. The entire programme that is run in the classroom is designed to prepare children for the next step to “big school”, with key competencies and expectations from parents and primary schools woven through everything we do in a day.

Our routines are flexible and allow for plenty of child initiated exploration and learning through play whilst still providing time for specific daily routines structured around meal times and group learning opportunities.

Meet the Kutai Team

Mel

MelKia Ora, My name is Mel and I’m the team leader for the 3 1/2 – 5years olds. I hold a Diploma of Teaching (ECE) and have full teacher’s registration.

Early Childhood has always been my passion and I’ve enjoyed working within this industry for the last six years. I enjoy all age groups, and enjoyed being part of the Under 2’s team at Jojo’s for a time, I find the interactions and explorations with the age group really exciting. They are transitioning from toddlers to “Big Kids” something I am enjoying being a part of.

I have worked with all age groups over the years and can definitely say I enjoy the ‘learning alongside’ aspect of working with the oldest age group.

Kelvin

KelvinTalofa, my name is Kelvin. I have recently completed studying my teaching degree, specializing in Primary Education. I have been working with children for over 12 years and spent a lot of it working with children with special needs.

I chose to work in Early Childhood to expand my working experience. I have found that I thoroughly enjoy working with this age group of 3-5 year olds. No two days are ever that same and I feel honoured to join in their discoveries and experiences.

I believe that children learn best in an environment that encourages them to feel safe and to take risks.  I believe my role is to allow their curiosities to flourish and foster independence.
I have two children of my own. My son Kingston who is 6 and my daughter who is 5.

I really love working at Jojo’s & I am looking forward to meeting parents and Whanau and sharing ways we can enrich the children’s learning experiences together.

Amanda

AmandaHi my name is Amanda King and I am one of the full time teachers in the Pāua Room. I am a qualified early childhood teacher and I have been working in this industry for nearly five and half years and still loving it. I am very passionate about with children as I get to watch them grow and learn every day which is very rewarding.

I really enjoy working with young children as no day is ever the same, I am always getting challenged in different ways and reflecting on different obstacles to better my practice. I enjoy setting up open ended activities and environments for children and areas where children can learn to be creative and discover new things for themselves but also to be there to support them when needed.

I believe that children should be in environments that are challenging; allowing children to take risks, problem solve and take their knowledge and abilities to the next level, whilst allowing them to build on their competencies
